As if hearing First Encounter Music for the first time, feel the charm of the collision between Eastern and Western music.
With the Chinese huqin family as the core—erhu, gaohu, and yehu, three distinctive instruments are played by the band leader, Lan Jiayu. The band uses huqin as its main voice, reinterpreting Chinese traditional music, pop works, and jazz classics through contemporary jazz arrangements. In the context of Western jazz, the music explores new possibilities of expression for huqin, creating a sonic world that transcends tradition and modernity, East and West.
The performance is presented by First Encounter Music, a cross-border band that combines huqin with Western instruments. In 2024, the band was selected as the 2025 Community Cultural Ambassador by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and has since performed and conducted music education activities in all 18 districts of Hong Kong.
The one who turned this cross-cultural vision into a stage reality is the band leader, Lan Jiayu—a Hong Kong huqin player who is active in jazz, pop, and various contemporary music fields. In 2025, she was invited to participate in Chinese singer Li Hao's 'Lost In Time' tour and performed in Beijing, Shanghai, and Xiamen.
